As many of you may know from reading this blog, I am a big proponent of vaping. But one of the things I don’t like about vaping is that it can be messy and complicated. Even with a relatively simple mod, you have to deal with tanks, atomizers, wicks, batteries and vape juice, at the very least. Also, they’re not particularly portable in that you often have to carry along extra juice and wicks, and the mod itself can leave a pretty big bulge in your pocket. Or you can go the alternative route and choose the “gas station” e-cigs put out by the major e-cigarette manufacturers such as Blu or Logic, but from my personal experience, these don’t give you anything near the flavor, throat hit and overall satisfaction of a proper mod.

But what if there was a product that gave you the best of both worlds—the ease and convenience of a “gas station” e-cig with the full, high-definition vaping experience of a complex mod? Well, I’m here to tell you that such a product exists, and I’ve found it. It’s called the Juul. This thing is unbelievable! It’s not only the easiest vaping product I’ve ever used—it’s the best vape I’ve ever had. And I think I’m a convert. So what makes this particular e-cig so special?

Leaf Tobacco and Nicotine Salts

As varying in design and engineering as they are, all vapes work pretty much in the same way. They use a battery to power up a heating element that raises the temperature of a liquid solution consisting mainly of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, nicotine and flavoring, causing the solution to boil. You then inhale the resulting vapor just as you would if you were smoking an analog cigarette, and from that get your nicotine hit. You also get an experience much more like traditional smoking than the patches and gums put out by the major pharmaceutical companies.

What makes the Juul different is that it replaces the raw nicotine extract in the solution with a mixture combining the raw nicotine with the organic acids that accompany the nicotine in its natural state in the tobacco plant. These “nicotine salts” give you a smoother, more authentic experience, more like actual smoking—but retaining all of the health and safety benefits that make vaping such a compelling alternative to smoking. For an excellent explanation of how the thing works chemically, please see this article from Wired magazine.

User Experience

I really like the Juul. For one thing, even before I sat down to read about all of that cool chemical engineering that goes into the juice, I could tell from my first draw that this was unlike any other e-cig I had ever tried—including my top of the line Provari mod that cost me $300 U.S. The draw was indeed smooth, very flavorful, and gave a great throat hit. I also found it gave me my nicotine buzz at least twice as quickly as with other products I’ve tried. So, at bottom, it’s a great vaping experience.

But it’s also easier to use than any other vaping system on the market. It doesn’t look or feel like a traditional cigarette, or, for that matter, like competing cigarette shaped devices, but its compact design contains a nice combination of curves and edges that feels good in the hand. It’s also very light and small, so you can hold it between your fingers like an analog cigarette. When you want a draw, you just lift it to your lips and breath in as deeply as you care to—exactly as you would with an analog cigarette. My two favorite times to vape are when I’m drinking my morning coffee and driving my car, so for me this design is particularly convenient. I can hold the device between my thumb and forefinger and puff away while keeping my left hand on or near the steering wheel.

The Juul is very convenient to use and maintain. You don’t have to clean it or change out small parts like wicks or atomizers. You don’t have to fiddle with messy vape juice. You won’t get your hands dirty. All you have to do is charge it up using a handy magnetic USB charger that comes with the kit, and pop in the sealed, juice filled flavor cartridge of your choice. The cartridge itself is about the size of your thumbnail. When you run out of juice, just pop in a new cartridge. Want to change flavors, just pop out the cartridge you’re using and pop in a different flavor. You can hot swap without a problem. The Juul is also very self-contained. It only takes an hour to fully charge, and a flavor cartridge lasts about 24 hours with regular use. If you just take the fully charged unit and maybe an extra juice cartridge when you leave the house in the morning, you’re good to go all day. No more carrying around bottles of vape juice.

So How Does it Taste?

Flavor variety and quality is perhaps the only draw back with this device. Unlike a regular mod, where you can choose from thousands of e-liquids of seemingly infinite variety, with the Juul, you are stuck with the handful of flavors that they make their cartridges in. But these are not bad. So far, I’ve tried the menthol, fruit and cucumber flavors. The menthol flavor is quite serviceable. The fruit flavor is fine. It tastes a bit like smarties, but it’s not too cloying. So far, I like the cucumber flavor best, as I find it cool and refreshing with a nice clean aftertaste. But it’s a limited edition flavor, so I hope they’ll make it a regular choice.

If you’re the kind of person who loves to experiment with many varieties of vape juice, this may not be the product for you. But if you just want a satisfying and convenient all day vape, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding a flavor to your liking.

The Bottom Line

The Juul is the best vape mod I have tried in my five years of vaping. It’s not for everybody, but if you value convenience and want a satisfying vape experience, the Juul is a great solution. So have you tried Juul? What do you think? Let me know below in the comments.
