Let’s face it, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a big phone. (Since there are a numberless amounts of websites evaluating the Galaxy Note 8 itself, I won’t bore you with specs, but let’s just say that I can’t comfortably put it in the front pocket of most of my blue jeans without it sticking out.) The Galaxy Note 8 is also a beautiful phone, with a svelte form factor and an infinity screen, all encased in Gorilla Glass and shiny aluminum goodness. At a retail price of around $1000, it’s also one of the most expensive phones you can buy. All of this begs the question, how can I best protect my beautiful, shiny new Galaxy Note 8 effectively without adding excessively to its size, and while maintaining its slim figure.
The Otterbox Symmetry Clear Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is what I would call a partial solution. Yes, it’s clear so you can see all of your Note 8’s lovely contours. On the other hand, its thick, especially on the perimeter, where it adds a bulky bumper to the phone. So, while the Otterbox Symmetry case certainly gives you good bang for your buck in terms of protection, you do lose some of the sensual experience of owning and handling your Note 8.
For this reason, I give it a “buy” rating, but you should be aware that there are slimmer, if less protective solutions out there.

The Galaxy Note 8 is a hulk of a phone even without any protection, which is perhaps the one downside to owning it. To carry it comfortably, I need either a jacket with big pockets, or my messenger bag. Putting this case on it does not help matters. But with it on, I can rest assured that my beautiful Note 8 will remain in pristine condition because this case is literally armor.
My biggest concern is that, because of the curved glass screen, the curve of the screen extends beyond the lip of the case. Leaving it relatively unprotected. I understand that this was probably a necessary design compromise—otherwise, the whole package would look like an unappealing tank. But if you go for this case I would definitely recommend you supplement it with a good screen protector.
As for how it effects the phone’s functionality, I experienced no problems. The Bixby button is still functional notwithstanding Samsung’s inconvenient placement. The volume rockers remain accessible and easy to use. Headphone, power port and speaker are all unobstructed, as is the camera. Also, I did not have any compatibility issues with my car’s dashboard mount.
The Otterbox Symmetry Clear Case for the Note 8 is a solid offering at a reasonable price, but if you bought this phone for its looks, you may want to consider other, slimmer options. If your primary concern is function over form, you will find that this case fits the bill as it is solid, sturdy, and does not interfere with the phone’s functionality. I recommend it to those who bought the Note 8 for what it can do over how it looks. For those who bought the Note 8 based on it’s form factor, I’d pass this one up.
